Happy Victoria Day! Countless Canadians have shown great courage on the battlefield, but only the bravest have received the Victoria Cross. This impressive medal – the highest award for military gallantry that a Canadian can receive – was introduced by Queen Victoria in 1856 and some 100 Canadians have been awarded one since then. Did you know a Victoria Cross recipient was born and raised in Hopewell Hill? L.COL Cyrus Wesley Peck was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on September 2, 1918. The photo shows the Peck family cemetery in Riverside-Albert, the Fence surrounding the cemetery was erected by Lt. Col. Cy Peck in the 1930s.

This photo came from Archives New Brunswick showing a prominent Widow’s Watch on the roof of this house. The widow’s watch was aptly named, as although the sea brought wealth to the county, it was also unforgiving with many a life lost. These watches can be seen all around the county on houses close to the water and you could see for miles down the river from them.

Today is the 75th Anniversary of VE day (Victory Europe), May 8, 1945 to May 8, 2020. Today 75 years ago the Second World War ended in Europe with the complete surrender of Nazi Germany. After 6 years of war there was peace. (The war in the Pacific would continue until August 15, 1945.) Here is a great photo of Cyril Cook in Seaman's Uniform, on May 9, 1943 with an unidentified man in Air Force uniform. This photo was take at the 1919 Victory Loans Gun in Hopewell Cape.
