Here is an interesting photo from August 19, 1927 showing the view of Hillsborough and Surrey from across the river in Dover. This photo was taken by H. W. Beecher Smith. From this photo you can see Hillsborough was aptly named!

Here is an interesting photo from August 30, 1933 showing the road between Hillsborough and Hopewell Hill. (I think this is just past Lower Cape around Shepody). This photo was taken by H. W. Beecher Smith.

This is the low water shot showing the “New” Wharf at Hopewell Cape, taken about 1919. You can just make out the remains of this wharf in Hopewell Cape.

Back to school Monday! Here is a photo circa 1900 of the Edgett’s Landing School in Edgett’s Landing. Does anyone know what the pole coming up through the front of the school is? Was it flag pole?

Albert County is lucky to have a reminder of what we can accomplish as a county when we work together. The 1919 Victory Loans gun, which has sat in the Hopewell Cape Square since 1920, was awarded to Albert County for winning the 1919 Victory Loans Competition for tripling our set goal and raising $347,600.00 for the Canadian Government to help bring the boys home. It is a testament to the people who sacrificed and supported our troops during and after the Great War. This photo is circa 1920 when the gun first arrived in Hopewell Cape.

Today’s photo is a picture of a Silver Cross which was given to May Joyce of Hopewell Cape, her son Harold George Joyce, 709283 was Killed in Action near the end of war on August 28, 1918. It serves as a poignant reminder that the cost of war is not only felt by the participants but also those they leave behind.

The Silver Cross or as it’s formally known The Memorial Cross, was a gift of Canada and was issued as a memento of personal loss and sacrifice on the part of widows and mothers of Canadian sailors, soldiers and airmen who died for their country during the war.

Harold George Joyce ,709283 was from Hopewell Cape, Albert County, New Brunswick and was born September 4, 1897. He was the son of John E. and May Joyce, of Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick. He enlisted with the 104th Battalion CEF on September 27, 1915. His occupation was listed as a seaman. He was listed as Killed in Action while fighting with the Canadian Machine Gun Corps on August 28, 1918. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Vimy Monument.

This is a photo of the Hillsborough Parish stained glass which used to be in Peck Memorial Hall in Hillsborough. This is a photo of the Centennial Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Hillsborough Cenotaph in 1967. The building of this cenotaph was a 1967 Centennial project.

It’s Remembrance Day, a time for somber reflection and thought. The one day of the year set aside to remember those who came before us, to remember those who paved the way for our peace and prosperity.

The Hillsborough Cenotaph reads. “In grateful remembrance of our comrades who gave their lives for the cause of freedom,” these poignant words, written by the men who returned, serve as a reminder the cost that we as Canadians owe these men. Not just the men who died, but to those men who served and who came back to live their lives and forge our nation.

For us, who are so removed from conflict, owe them all a debt of gratitude that words cannot tell.

At the going down of the sun we will remember them.
